This carol is a traditional provencal carol, which would originally have been played on a high pitched flute and a special drum, called the tambour.
At our Savior's birth we play;
This hath ever been our way;
Blow the pipe and play the drum:
Blow the pipe and play the drum,
For the King of Kings has come!
Leap for joy and dance and sing,
Drum and pipe re-echoing
Closer yet than pipe and drum,
Closer yet than pipe and drum
God and man this day become!
