O Christmas Tree

The symbolic significance of the Christmas tree actually has its roots in old European religions and is connected with celebrating the winter solstice. However, the Christian Church later assimilated the Christmas tree as a symbol of new life at Christ's birth. Some Germans believed that Luther himself invented the custom, but historical documention of decorating Christmas trees date as early as 1605.

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,

Of all the trees most lovely!

Each year you bring renewed delight,

A-gleaming in the Christmas night:

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,

Of all the trees most lovely!

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,

Your leaves will surely teach me

That hope and love and faithfulness

Are precious things I can possess:

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,

Your leaves will surely teach me.
